Planned hiring

Software Engineer, Desktop

Lucy is a proactive AI coach from Lucy Labs that lives on your desktop as a cloud-backed app.

Planned hiring. This description explains the work we are preparing to hire for; it is not a confirmed start date or offer.

Build Lucy's native desktop foundation so permissioned observation and coaching delivery work predictably on a person's computer. Lucy's desktop app runs on Windows and macOS; this role starts with the Windows build. You will make device behavior, user control and recovery as dependable as the visible product experience.

Your mission

Build Lucy's native desktop foundation so permissioned observation and coaching delivery work predictably on a person's computer. Lucy's desktop app runs on Windows and macOS; this role starts with the Windows build. You will make device behavior, user control and recovery as dependable as the visible product experience.

What you will build

  • Implement the Windows collector and native integrations around permitted application and window activity, using the relevant Windows APIs and accessibility interfaces. Prefer event-driven observation with bounded reconciliation, and respect excluded applications, permission state and device constraints.
  • Build the desktop runtime, tray and local delivery integration. Work with Product Engineering on Lucy's conversational and coaching surfaces, preserving focus and quiet states so coaching does not interrupt work unnecessarily.
  • Implement immediate pause, permission loss handling and understandable observation status with Design and Product Security. Translate consent and organization policy into enforceable local behavior, including transitions while work is in progress.
  • Own bounded encrypted local storage, offline buffering and upload handoff. Preserve stable record identifiers and provenance through retries, restarts and reconnects; make queue pressure and recovery visible without exposing private material in diagnostics.
  • Build packaging, signing, installation, updates and rollback with Platform Engineering. Diagnose permission changes, partial updates, application crashes and performance regressions on representative supported devices.
  • Measure CPU, memory and responsiveness and maintain native component tests. Define a realistic supported-device matrix with QA, then provide reproducible evidence for release decisions.

Your partners and boundaries

Desktop owns collection and delivery, while Behavior derives meaning and Coaching decides interventions. Data Engineering owns cloud ingestion and lifecycle; Product Engineering owns shared feature flows. Product Security helps define controls and verify privacy behavior. Field teams coordinate deployment and Support handles routine cases; you investigate product defects through that handoff. This is a native desktop role. Browser-extension work and on-device semantic inference are outside the current assignment and require separate product decisions.

What you bring

You have built and debugged Windows desktop software using native APIs and production languages appropriate to the platform. You understand processes, permissions, local storage, secure updates and failure recovery. You can trace a device issue from user symptoms to actionable evidence and make resource tradeoffs explicit. Experience with privacy-sensitive software, accessibility APIs or enterprise deployment is useful. Ability to contribute to the macOS app is welcome, but the initial assessment centers on Windows delivery and engineering judgment.

Your first 90 days

Confirm the pilot OS, device and permission matrix against the current collector proposal. Deliver one permitted observation-to-upload path with visible pause and reliable recovery. Demonstrate reconnect, permission-loss and interrupted-update behavior with QA. Record resource measurements and remaining constraints, and leave a reproducible build and diagnostic guide that another engineer can use. Commitments depend on the agreed pilot slice, rather than assuming both operating systems launch together.
