Your mission

Your responsibilities
- Coach, onboard and assess engineers through clear expectations, useful feedback and regular development conversations. Hire against demonstrated workload and funded needs, with a fair assessment of practical engineering ability.
- Plan a bounded product slice with Product and Design, connecting desktop, service and data work through explicit dependencies and acceptance criteria. Track outcomes and learning rather than rewarding activity alone.
- Maintain component ownership, review coverage, integrated release evidence and a workable response to production defects. Allocate operational work and incident recovery sustainably with Platform/SRE.
- Reserve capacity for field-to-core assessment, hardening and maintenance. Help engineers distinguish a useful customer prototype from a reusable capability that core can support.
- Make management, technical review and implementation allocations explicit. Surface overload and missing specialist coverage without counting a founder or manager as a second full engineer.
Partners and authority
You manage a named team within Core Product. Travis leads Product with the PMs; scientific and platform staff retain their assigned reporting homes. Your reporting line is explicitly assigned when the role is filled and does not depend on a vacant Director or VP being hired. Thomas, CTrO, leads the field function and contributes allocated input; he is not the default engineering manager. James, Head of Business Development, has no formal reports.
What you bring
You have managed engineers, delivered clear feedback and improved a team's ability to ship maintainable software. Your technical judgment supports design review and diagnosis across client and service boundaries. You can negotiate realistic commitments with Product, protect quality under pressure and explain capacity choices without concealing uncertainty.
Your first 90 days
Confirm the direct-report roster and the time available for management. Establish individual expectations and a realistic delivery plan. Review the team's highest-risk interfaces, release practices and operational load. Agree a small set of improvements with named owners, then show whether they improve delivery and team sustainability.
